What is a 'yağlı urgan' (noose)?

The 'yağlı urgan' (noose) is a type of knot that carries deep historical and cultural significance, serving both as a binding tool and as a symbol associated with dark themes such as suicide and execution.

WHAT IS A NOOSE?

The 'yağlı urgan' is a knotting technique known colloquially as the "execution knot" or "noose." This knot features a loop created at the end of a rope, designed to tighten and prevent the rope from slipping when tension is applied. It is generally used to hang a rope from a point or to secure an object. However, due to its name, this knot also has a notorious reputation in the application of capital punishment.

WAS IT USED IN TURKEY?

The vast majority of executions in Turkey were carried out by hanging. During the Republican era, a total of 712 people were sentenced to death; these executions were decisions approved by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM). Furthermore, it is stated that there were between 1,000 and 2,000 death sentences issued by the Independence Tribunals. [citation needed] While some executions were carried out in public view until 1967, executions after 1967 were carried out in prisons, secretly before sunrise. The last execution in Turkey took place on October 25, 1984, when Devrimci-Yol militant Hıdır Aslan was hanged at the Burdur E-Type Closed Prison. The death penalty was first abolished in Turkey on May 3, 2001, for crimes other than war crimes, the imminent threat of war, and terrorism. On August 1, 2002, it was also abolished for war crimes and the imminent threat of war. Finally, on July 14, 2004, the death penalty was abolished for all crimes.
