WHO IS SEDAD HAKKI ELDEM?

Sedad Hakkı Eldem was born in Istanbul in 1908 into a family belonging to the Ottoman upper class. Because his father, İsmail Hakkı Bey, was a diplomat, Sedad Hakkı Eldem spent his childhood in European cities such as Geneva, Munich, and Zurich.

Having completed his primary education in French and his high school education in German, Sedad Hakkı Eldem was highly proficient in both languages.

He returned to Istanbul in 1924. In 1928, he graduated from the architecture department of the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts.

He opened his own office in Istanbul in 1932, and at the same time, he began teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts, continuing his role as a faculty member at the Academy until his retirement in 1978.

HE CONDUCTED RESEARCH ON CLASSICAL OTTOMAN ARCHITECTURE

By conducting studies on Ottoman-era houses and 18th-19th century palaces and mansions, as well as research on classical Ottoman architecture, he pioneered the reuse of traditional motifs in architectural design. Regarding the preservation of historical structures, he served on the Council for the Preservation of Antiquities between 1941-1945, and later on the High Council of Real Estate Antiquities and Monuments between 1962-1978.

He represented Turkey in the International Union of Architects (UIA), which was established after World War II and held its first general assembly meeting in Lausanne in 1948. In 1986, he won the international Aga Khan Award for Architecture. He passed away in Istanbul on September 7, 1988.
