WHO IS MAHİR POLAT?

Mahir Polat was born in Erzincan in 1976. He graduated from the Department of Archaeology and Art History at Istanbul University's Faculty of Letters in 2002.

In 2003, he began the Master's program in Architectural History at Istanbul Technical University. In 2008, he completed his postgraduate education at the Yeditepe University Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Art and Design, Museology Program, with a thesis on the curatorial activities of museums. He served as a guest lecturer in the same department between 2011 and 2015, teaching courses on cultural heritage legislation.

Since 2009, he has been continuing his doctoral thesis work on religious cultural heritage at the Istanbul University Institute of Social Sciences.

He began his career at the General Directorate of Foundations in 2005 and continued as a Foundation Expert starting in 2009. He served as the director of the Akaretler Atatürk Museum from 2014 to 2016 and the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts from 2016 to 2019. During this period, he took part in numerous museum establishment and restoration projects.

Mahir Polat, who conducts studies on historical cultural environment protection, museology, religious cultural social history, social memory, and architectural history, is a member of the History Foundation Board of Trustees, Europa Nostra Turkey, and the Foundation Experts Association.
