Will Erdoğan go to Damascus? Interim Chargé d'Affaires of the Damascus Embassy Burhan Köroğlu explains
It has been learned that AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has plans to visit Damascus, the capital of Syria. Speaking on the matter, Interim Chargé d'Affaires of the Damascus Embassy Burhan Köroğlu said, "After our Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, our President Erdoğan is also considering coming to Damascus."
Following the overthrow of the 24-year Bashar al-Assad administration by jihadist groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in Syria, developments in the region are being closely monitored.
With the fall of the Assad administration, Turkey's Embassy in Damascus has resumed its operations in Syria after a 12-year hiatus.
After MIT Undersecretary İbrahim Kalın traveled to the Syrian capital of Damascus and performed prayers at the Umayyad Mosque, AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had announced that Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan would also visit Damascus in the near future. While the question of whether Erdoğan himself will go to Damascus remains on the agenda, a statement regarding the matter came from Interim Chargé d'Affaires of the Damascus Embassy Burhan Köroğlu.
Speaking to TVNET, Köroğlu stated that Erdoğan will pay a visit to Damascus, noting that this visit will be an important milestone in relations with Syria. Köroğlu said, "I also appreciate that we will have a relationship with Syria similar to the one during the Ottoman era."
