Will Turkey build an Iron Dome?

Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek made statements regarding the current agenda. Şimşek spoke for the first time about the regulation, which has been on Turkey's agenda for some time and criticized by the public, that stipulates a 750 TL defense industry contribution fee from credit cards. The Minister emphasized that the defense industry needs additional resources.

WILL AN IRON DOME BE BUILT?

In his statement, Mehmet Şimşek said, "Our country has no option other than to increase its deterrent power. There is a fire in our region, there are wars. We are in a troubled neighborhood. The purpose of the resource to be transferred from credit cards to the defense industry is to increase our country's deterrence. The purpose of this is very clear. Turkey is in a breakthrough in the defense industry. At the beginning of the 2000s, the defense industry was very meager. Turkey was procuring more than 80 percent of its needs from abroad. Today, it has completely reversed. 3500 of our companies are producing equipment for the defense industry. An iron dome will be built. An air defense system that will protect the country will be established. These are expensive systems. We have been investing money in the 5th generation aircraft for a long time. We produced it, it has started flights. The engine needs to be developed. There are over 1000 projects. This requires resources. A demand for additional resources has arisen," he said.

WHAT DOES IRON DOME MEAN?

The Iron Dome is an air defense system developed by Israel. This system is used primarily to protect cities and strategic areas against short-range rocket and mortar attacks. Developed by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems company, the Iron Dome detects launched rockets via radar and destroys them in the air by sending interceptor missiles against them.

The primary purpose of the Iron Dome is to protect civilian residential areas, military bases, and critical infrastructure against enemy attacks. The system stands out for being effective against low-cost, short-range rockets and mortars. At the same time, it has achieved great success due to its capacity to respond very quickly and plays a critical role in security strategy.

HOW DOES THE IRON DOME WORK?

The short-range system called the "Iron Dome" works with radar and cameras. It detects and destroys rockets and artillery shells within a few seconds of their launch. The Iron Dome system uses 3-meter-long, 16 cm diameter solid-fuel "Tamir" missiles. An "Iron Dome" battery consists of a radar, a command-and-control center, and 3 launchers, each with 20 Tamir missiles. The manufacturer states that the Iron Dome can destroy 8 out of 10 missiles.

750 LIRA INDUSTRY FUND WILL BE COLLECTED

Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek stated regarding the 750 TL fee, "The defense industry needs additional resources, Turkey will build an iron dome, and not a single penny of this money will go to the budget."

In this context, the regulation is planned to come into effect on January 1, 2025. However, the date when the tax will start to be collected may occur at a different time.
