Written statement issued following National Security Council meeting: Support for Syria will continue
The first National Security Council (MGK) meeting of 2026 has concluded. A written statement was issued following the MGK meeting, which was held under the leadership of AKP Chairman and President Erdoğan.
The following information regarding the content of the meeting was shared in a written statement released from the Communications Directorate's social media account:
The National Security Council convened on January 28, 2026, under the chairmanship of the President of the Republic of Türkiye, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
At the meeting;
1. Political, military, economic, and social events that took place in 2025 and are of importance to our national security were evaluated; potential developments that may be encountered in 2026, as well as the work to be carried out and measures to be taken in this context, were discussed.
2. The Council was briefed on the activities carried out with determination, resolve, and success both domestically and abroad against all kinds of threats and dangers to our national unity and survival, particularly the PKK/KCK-PYD/YPG, FETÖ, and DAESH terrorist organizations, as well as recent international developments.
3. The progress made toward the goal of a "Terror-Free Türkiye" was addressed; it was emphasized that steps aimed at strengthening the security, stability, and prosperity of our country and our region will continue with determination.
4. It was noted that the strong support given to the efforts of our neighbor Syria to ensure its sovereignty, territorial integrity, unitary structure, and political unity, as well as the efforts to increase the peace, security, and prosperity of the Syrian people, will continue.
5. The latest situation in Gaza and the future of a ceasefire were evaluated; it was emphasized that Türkiye, as one of the founding members of the international structures established to resolve the Gaza issue, will continue its efforts to deliver comprehensive humanitarian aid to the region, and it was confirmed that it is ready to assume all kinds of responsibilities together with its partners for the reconstruction of Gaza and the establishment of lasting peace.
6. Our support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia was underscored; it was stated that Türkiye will continue to fulfill the requirements of the law of brotherhood in the struggle of the Somali people against terrorist organizations.
7. Current developments centered in Iran were discussed in detail; it was pointed out that the stability and peace of our neighbor Iran are of great importance for the security of our region.
8. The current situation in the Russia-Ukraine War was evaluated; it was once again reminded that all parties must act responsibly so that the repercussions of the war do not undermine the stability being maintained in the Black Sea.
It was stated that Türkiye will continue its efforts to end the war, which is gradually increasing regional and global risks, and to urgently establish lasting peace.
9. It was noted that Türkiye will continue its multi-dimensional activities with determination in 2026, aimed at maintaining peace and establishing stability in various conflict and crisis zones across a vast geography extending from its immediate vicinity to Asia, Africa, and Europe.
