Yılmaz Tunç targets social media

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç attended the Judicial Organization Meeting held at the Justice Organization Strengthening Foundation (ATGV) Antalya Training and Social Facility in Antalya.

Delivering a speech there, Tunç stated that justice is the most important common value that ensures the peace and order of society and is the key to social balance, adding: "Justice is the guarantee that all individuals who make up society live in safety and prosperity. Where justice is strong, the individual, the family, and society are strong. The entire duty of the judiciary, its working method and style, and even everything including independence and impartiality, is for the manifestation of justice. Our nation's expectation from us is a well-functioning, predictable, prompt, and fairer judicial system."

"JUSTICE IS GIVING THE RIGHTFUL THEIR DUE"

Explaining that the concept of justice is not a concept that changes from person to person, but is clear, explicit, and open, Tunç noted the following:

"Justice is giving the rightful their due. It is putting everything in its proper place. Justice, which is such a sacred and valuable concept, is the fundamental reason for the arduous journey of judicial employees in pursuit of material truth. For judicial employees, delivering rights to the oppressed and extinguishing the fire of injustice to soothe consciences is a difficult test that lasts a lifetime. Members of the judiciary must act only under the guidance of the Constitution and laws, and in the light of their conscience. For this reason, it should not be forgotten that every decision made is not just the resolution of a case, but also an effort to establish a balance in the scales of justice for the social conscience."

TARGETED SOCIAL MEDIA

Continuing his speech, Tunç targeted social media and continued his words as follows:

"Furthermore, we will never tolerate disinformation campaigns against the judiciary on social media and other platforms, or attempts to shake the sense of justice. We will absolutely not tolerate false statements aimed at undermining the judiciary, which we characterize as 'social media courts'.

Because we know very well that the purpose of such attempts is not only to shake trust in the judiciary but directly in the state. For this reason, we will resolutely eliminate such efforts aimed at undermining our judicial members and our justice system.

Additionally, while you are making your decisions, you must not allow any voice or discourse that tries to shadow the truth to stain the clarity of your consciences. Each of your decisions must be taken only by listening to the voice of the Constitution, the laws, and your conscience. Intentional comments made without knowing the file, the law, or the evidence, or individual interests, should carry no weight on your scales of justice."

Stating that members of the judiciary must act under the guidance of their conscience with loyalty to the universal principles of law without remaining in the shadow of any pressure, Tunç expressed his views: "In the fight against social media disinformation, informing the public correctly holds an important place. Our Chief Public Prosecutors and media communication offices must be active in order to correct false perceptions regarding the judiciary and to inform the public correctly. Because incomplete or incorrect information in the media can increase unfair criticisms against the judiciary and cause the formation of negative opinions such as the 'perception of impunity'."
