YODAK President Avcı, arrested in 'fake diploma' investigation in TRNC, to be tried without detention

The investigation into fake diplomas and corruption, which was launched some time ago at the Cyprus Health and Social Sciences University (KTSU) in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), is ongoing. 

YODAK President Turgay Avcı and his former deputy Prof. Dr. Mehmet Hasgüler, who were arrested on March 8 as part of the investigation, appeared before the judge.

The court released Avcı and Hasgüler to be tried without detention, on the condition that two guarantors sign a promissory note for 1 million TL each and that they each post 50 thousand TL bail.

The court also imposed a travel ban on Avcı and Hasgüler and ordered them to report to a police station once a week. In a statement after his release, Avcı said, "Our heads are held high, our consciences are clear."

It is alleged that YODAK President Avcı and Hasgüler, who was the YODAK Vice President at the time, accepted bribes to expedite the procedures for the opening of a Faculty of Medicine at the Cyprus Health and Social Sciences University. It is claimed that Avcı and Hasgüler approved the medical faculty on March 14, 2023, and that Avcı received 10 thousand dollars and Hasgüler received 8 thousand dollars from the university.
