Zafer Party changes its decision on Saraçhane: They will take to the square.. 'Protect and defend democracy and the rule of law!'
The Zafer Party has decided to participate in the protest held in Saraçhane following the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. The Zafer Party had previously announced that it would not participate due to the support of the Democratic Equality Party (DEM) for the protest. However, they announced today that they have made a new decision and will join the demonstration.
Zafer Party Deputy Chairman Ali Dinçer Çolak announced that they will participate in the protest in Saraçhane. Party Chairman Ümit Özdağ, in a message released from prison, stated, 'Protect and defend democracy and the rule of law.'
Announcing the decision to participate in the protest to the public, the Zafer Party emphasized the supremacy of the principles of democracy and the rule of law. The party called for caution against provocations during the demonstration.
Ümit Özdağ's message included the following statements:
''My dear Atatürkist, Turkish Nationalist, patriotic young brothers and sisters, I am writing these lines to you from my 15-square-meter cell in Silivri, where I can only watch Halk TV as an opposition channel. I embrace you all with love. I salute your stance against civil martial law with respect. Protect and defend democracy and the rule of law. And believe me, there are so many security officers among the police tasked with stopping you who think just like you. Never give an opportunity to provocateurs who might be planted among us.
Stay away from potential agent provocateurs who encourage breaking the law. Do not let your noble struggle be tarnished. I know you will not allow the exploitation of PKK sympathizers. You are exercising your legal right to protest with care and diligence, and I am sure you will continue to use it this way. As the leading force in the struggle for democracy and the rule of law, the Zafer Party stands with the clean and noble children of the Turkish Nation. I kiss you all on the eyes. May God protect you. Long live the youth of Mustafa Kemal, long live the National, Unitary, Secular Republic of Turkey!''
