1.6 million people lose their money: 507 million lira forgotten in banks transferred to the SDIF!
Approximately 507 million lira accumulated in 1 million 672 thousand 473 accounts that have been inactive for 10 years in banks was transferred to the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (SDIF) as of 2024.
Money forgotten in accounts that have not been transacted for many years in banks has been transferred to the SDIF.
As reported by AA, a total of 507 million lira accumulated in 1 million 672 thousand 473 accounts that have not been transacted for 10 years as of the end of 2023 was transferred to the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund in accordance with legal processes.
According to the regulation published in the Official Gazette, deposits, participation funds, trusts, and receivables that have not been transacted for 10 years in banks are subject to the statute of limitations. If not claimed by the rightful owners or their heirs, these accounts are transferred to the SDIF.
These accounts, which are announced every year in February, are listed on the websites of banks and the SDIF for 4 months. The amount transferred in 2024 consisted of different currencies such as the US dollar, euro, sterling, Swiss franc, and Japanese yen, in addition to the Turkish lira. While the highest amount in the forgotten accounts was recorded as 124 million lira, 4.5 million dollars and 5.6 million euros were also among the amounts transferred to the Fund.
If the rightful owners or heirs do not apply regarding the announced accounts by June 14, the accounts will continue to be transferred to the SDIF. The same process will be applied in 2025 for accounts that have reached the statute of limitations as of the end of 2024.
