According to data from the Basic Needs Association (TİDER), the number of people in need of basic food has increased by 5 percent in the last year due to high inflation and the impact of the earthquake, and the number of citizens in need of basic food has approached 1 million.
According to 2021 figures, more than 820 million people worldwide are living at the hunger and poverty line.
However, one-third of the food produced worldwide is also wasted. In Turkey, the amount of food wasted in a year reaches 18 million tons, while the annual cost of this to the economy exceeds 410 billion TL.
INCREASED BY 300 THOUSAND SINCE THE PANDEMIC
As reported by Şehriban Kıraç from Cumhuriyet, TİDER, which was established to both prevent food waste and provide food support to those in need, has reached 70 support markets in 38 provinces.
Hande Tibuk, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Basic Needs Association (TİDER), stated that there has been a significant increase in the number of people receiving social assistance during the process that began with the pandemic and continued with the earthquake, and said that the number of people supported has increased from the 700 thousand level to nearly 1 million since the pandemic.
