2024 unemployment figures announced!
In Turkey, the unemployment rate in the first quarter of the year decreased by 0.1 percentage points compared to the previous quarter, reaching 8.7 percent.
The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has shared the labor force statistics for the January-March period with the public.
Accordingly, the number of unemployed persons aged 15 and over increased by 30 thousand in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the previous quarter, reaching 3 million 105 thousand. The unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 8.7 percent. The unemployment rate was estimated at 7.2 percent for men and 11.7 percent for women.
NUMBER OF EMPLOYED PERSONS INCREASED
The number of employed persons increased by 534 thousand in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the previous quarter, reaching 32 million 442 thousand, while the employment rate increased by 0.7 percentage points to 49.3 percent. This rate was 66.6 percent for men and 32.4 percent for women.
The labor force increased by 563 thousand in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the previous quarter, reaching 35 million 546 thousand, and the labor force participation rate increased by 0.8 percentage points to 54.1 percent. The labor force participation rate was 71.7 percent for men and 36.7 percent for women.
The unemployment rate for the youth population, covering the 15-24 age group, decreased by 0.5 percentage points compared to the previous quarter, reaching 15.6 percent. In this age group, the unemployment rate was estimated at 12.8 percent for men and 20.9 percent for women.
The number of seasonally adjusted employed persons in the first quarter of 2024 increased by 73 thousand in the agriculture sector, 103 thousand in the industry sector, 82 thousand in the construction sector, and 276 thousand in the service sector compared to the previous quarter. Of those employed, 14.6 percent were in agriculture, 20.8 percent in industry, 6.6 percent in construction, and 58.0 percent in the service sector.
AVERAGE WEEKLY ACTUAL WORKING HOURS WERE 43.5 HOURS
The seasonally and calendar-adjusted average weekly actual working hours of those employed who were at work during the reference period decreased by 0.4 hours in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the previous quarter, reaching 43.5 hours.
