Tech company owners also continue to top the lists of the wealthiest people with their fortunes. US businessman Elon Musk ranks first on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index with a fortune of 227 billion dollars. Eight of the other businesspeople in the top 10 are involved in the technology business.
24 TERAWATT-HOURS OF ANNUAL ELECTRICITY
The amount of electricity consumed by technology companies is increasing significantly in direct proportion to their growth.
According to information compiled from data on the Visual Capitalist website, Google and Microsoft each consume 24 terawatt-hours of electricity annually. These two companies consume more electricity than countries such as Jordan with a population of 11 million (20 terawatt-hours), Iceland with a population of 400 thousand (19 terawatt-hours), Ghana with a population of 34 million (19 terawatt-hours), and North Korea with a population of 26 million (18 terawatt-hours).
While the total consumption of the two technology companies amounts to 48 terawatt-hours, this figure means they consume more electricity than Nigeria, which has a population of 223 million (31 terawatt-hours). Other technology companies on the list, Meta consumes 12 terawatt-hours, Apple 2 terawatt-hours, and Nvidia 0.5 terawatt-hours of electricity.
ELECTRICITY USAGE INCREASED BY 17 PERCENT LAST YEAR
According to the data on the site, the data centers owned by large technology companies are the reason for the majority of their electricity consumption.
According to the 2024 Environmental Report published by Google, the electricity usage of its data centers increased by 17 percent in 2023. The company's data centers account for 10 percent of the electricity consumption used by data centers globally.
Microsoft, on the other hand, has made a major leap with the developments in the field of artificial intelligence over the last 4 years. The company, which consumed 11 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2020, saw its electricity consumption more than double in 4 years, reaching 24 terawatt-hours.
