3-installment limit on smartphones to be expanded

3-installment limit on smartphones to be expanded

Due to rising costs and increasing device prices in the smartphone market, plans are underway to change the installment application. While consumer demand has increased, especially with the widespread adoption of 5G-supported models, high prices have been putting pressure on the sector.

According to a report in the pro-government newspaper Türkiye Gazetesi, the Ministry of Trade has initiated work to reorganize the installment limit applied to mobile phones. Within the scope of the prepared regulation, it is being evaluated to increase the 12-installment limit, which is currently applied as 20,000 TL, to over 30,000 TL. It is stated that the regulation could come into effect in May or June.

35,000 TL OPTION FOR THE NEW LIMIT IS ALSO ON THE TABLE

In the meetings held between sector representatives and the ministry, it was stated that the current limit remains insufficient. During the discussions, it was requested that the upper limit for phones eligible for 12 installments be increased to 30,000 TL, or even to the 35,000 TL level according to some proposals.

INSTALLMENT RESTRICTIONS CONTINUE FOR HIGH-PRICED MODELS

Under the current practice, installments of up to 12 months can be made for mobile phones valued below 20,000 TL. For devices above this figure, consumers can only benefit from a 3-installment option. With the new regulation, it is aimed to include more expensive models in the long-term payment scope.

SECTOR EXPECTS SALES TO REVIVE

According to experts, increasing the installment limit could have a positive impact on phone sales, especially in the second half of the year. While an expectation of 15 to 20 percent growth in the sector is being voiced, it is stated that the regulation could reduce the stagnation in the retail side.

Spot: It has been claimed that the Ministry of Trade is preparing to raise the installment limit applied to mobile phones. If the regulation is implemented, some models over 30,000 TL could also be included in the 12-installment scope.
