8.2 million people traveled in the first quarter of the year

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has released the "household domestic tourism" data for the first quarter of 2024.

Accordingly, in the first quarter consisting of January, February, and March, 8 million 262 thousand people residing in the country went on trips. The total number of trips made by travelers within the country with one or more overnight stays decreased by 2.3 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year, totaling 9 million 854 thousand trips. Travelers in this quarter spent 65 million 239 thousand nights. The average number of overnight stays was 6.6 nights.

4 THOUSAND 593 TL EXPENDITURE PER TRIP

Domestic tourism expenditures by local tourists within the country increased by 103.2 percent in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same quarter of the previous year, reaching 45 billion 262 million 452 thousand TL. Of these expenditures, 95.6 percent, or 43 billion 273 million 587 thousand TL, consisted of personal expenditures, while 4.4 percent, or 1 billion 988 million 864 thousand TL, consisted of package tour expenditures. The average expenditure per trip was 4 thousand 593 TL.

127 PERCENT INCREASE IN ACCOMMODATION EXPENDITURES

When the distribution of expenditure types within total travel expenditures for this quarter is examined, food and beverage expenditures had the highest share at 33.3 percent, followed by transportation expenditures at 28.8 percent, and accommodation expenditures at 10.9 percent. When the change rates of these expenditure types compared to the same period last year are examined, an increase of 91.4 percent was observed in food and beverage expenditures, 80.8 percent in transportation expenditures, and 127.3 percent in accommodation expenditures.

In terms of the purposes for traveling, "trips, entertainment, and vacation" ranked second with 22.5 percent, while "health" ranked third with 6.6 percent.

In this quarter, travelers stayed most frequently at "friends' or relatives' homes" with 53 million 228 thousand overnight stays. According to accommodation types, "hotels" ranked second in the number of overnight stays with 4 million 971 thousand, while "own home" ranked third with 4 million 354 thousand overnight stays.
