Affecting millions: Long-term care insurance for the elderly is coming

Preparations for a "Long-Term Care Insurance" model are underway to ensure the sustainability of care services in parallel with Turkey's growing elderly population.

According to Sabah, Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz stated that adapting to the aging population structure and strengthening care services are among the priority goals.

CRITICAL MESSAGES AT THE ELDERLY COUNCIL

Yılmaz attended the closing program of the 2nd Elderly Council, held under the auspices of the Presidency, together with Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş. In his assessment there, he stated that demographic change requires new steps in terms of social policies.

TURKEY IS IN THE "VERY OLD COUNTRY" CATEGORY

Sharing data on Turkey's elderly population ratio, Yılmaz noted that the country ranks 75th out of 194 countries globally. He pointed out that the proportion of the population aged 65 and over, which was 5.7 percent in 2000, exceeded 10 percent for the first time as of 2023.

"When the ratio of the population over 65 to the total population exceeds 10 percent, that country enters the 'very old country' category. If this continues, this rate will rise to 11.1 percent in 2025. It will reach 13.5 percent in 2030, and one-third of the population by 2100."

PREPARATIONS FOR CARE INSURANCE CONTINUE

Emphasizing that strengthening services for the elderly is among the priority goals, Yılmaz said, "In this direction, we are continuing our work towards the implementation of the Long-Term Care Insurance System."

With the planned system, it is aimed that elderly individuals will be able to access needs such as nursing services, personal care support, and medical equipment at home or in care centers more easily and securely.
