'Affordable' fruits and vegetables see 100 percent price hike in five months

According to a report by Özgür Ayaydın from CEGA Medya, the price of products in Diyarbakır that were previously thrown away but are now sold on greengrocer and market shelves under the name "affordable fruits and vegetables" due to rising cost of living and inflation, has increased by 100 percent since July.

While a photo taken in July 2023 shows "affordable" fruits and vegetables being sold for 3.99 Turkish Liras (TL), this price rose to 8 TL in December 2023.

The "affordable fruit and vegetable" corners seen in many markets in Diyarbakır reveal the extent of the poverty citizens are facing. 

INFLATION IS 61.98 PERCENT ACCORDING TO TURKSTAT, 129.27 PERCENT ACCORDING TO ENAG

TURKSTAT has announced the inflation figures for November. While the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 3.28 percent in November, it reached 61.98 percent on an annual basis. The highest increase in November was seen in housing with 11.17 percent.

In the CPI report it published, TURKSTAT announces inflation rates according to 12 different main expenditure groups. Accordingly, the expenditure group that increased the most on an annual basis was "restaurants and hotels" with 92.86 percent. This group was followed by "health" with 82.13 percent and "education" with 81.49 percent.

DISK-AR: FOOD INFLATION FOR LOW-INCOME EARNERS IS 106 PERCENT

The DISK Research Center (DISK-AR) has announced the average food inflation for November. According to DISK-AR, average food inflation is 67 percent, and food inflation for retirees is 82.5 percent. DISK-AR calculated food inflation for low-income earners at 106 percent.

In the statement by DISK-AR, it was said, "While the food inflation of the poorest income group was 105.5 percent, the food inflation of the highest income group remained at 48.9 percent. This situation reveals that inflation is felt significantly differently according to income groups and different social segments and classes."
