Allegations of a new destination for meat imports: Eyes turn to Paraguay

A new import allegation has emerged in the agriculture and livestock sector. Agricultural policy expert Ergin Kahveci claimed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has made changes to regulations to allow for the import of live animals and beef from Paraguay, a country that previously made headlines over "smuggled meat" controversies.

According to the report in Tarımdan Haber, Kahveci stated that this development was not announced to producers, livestock farmers, or the public in Turkey through official channels, and that the issue came to light through reports in the Paraguayan press.

Ergin Kahveci stated that producers and the public in Turkey should receive information about these developments firsthand, noting that the reports in the Paraguayan press are noteworthy.

According to Kahveci, the Paraguayan press evaluated Turkey's import decision as an "opportunity for meat and live cattle."

Kahveci noted that the assessments in the Paraguayan press view the Turkish market as a significant commercial opportunity and quoted the following statements:

"An opportunity for meat and live cattle. The approval covers the export of both live cattle and beef, expanding commercial opportunities for Paraguay in a market with a population of over 85 million where the demand for animal protein is steadily increasing. When it comes to live cattle imports, this authorization opens a new door for the livestock sector, as Turkey is one of the world's largest importers of live animals. However, it also brings with it challenges related to establishing an efficient logistics system that will allow for competitive business agreements. Adapting protocols, infrastructure, and shipping systems will be key elements in capitalizing on this new trade opportunity."

ASSESSMENT OF IMPORT POLICIES

In the assessments included in the report, it was claimed that with the legislative changes, countries that were previously closed to imports have been added to the list of countries from which imports can be made.

Kahveci argued that while it is stated that these practices are implemented for the sake of "food supply security," domestic producers and livestock farmers could be left in a difficult position in the face of global competition.

It was noted that the agreement allegedly made with Paraguay is not limited to meat imports alone, but also creates controversy regarding Turkey's agriculture and livestock policies.

2016 SMUGGLED MEAT ALLEGATIONS RESURFACE

Paraguay had previously made headlines in Turkey over allegations of smuggled meat.

In 2016, allegations that smuggled meat was being brought into Turkey from Paraguay caused a wide stir in public opinion, and the issue was debated for a long time in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.

The claim that the country in question has been included among the countries from which Turkey imports live animals and meat, following the alleged legislative change, has brought new debates regarding livestock policies to the fore.
