As global wealth hits record highs in 2026, billionaires' risk perception grows

As wealth grows rapidly across the globe, the biggest focus for billionaires regarding the future is not just growth, but also risk management. In particular, geopolitical tensions, uncertainties caused by trade wars, and wealth succession are emerging as the primary agenda items in billionaire circles.

Looking at the data in UBS's "Billionaire Ambitions" report for 2025, it is observed that the number of billionaires worldwide rose to 2,919 as 2025 came to a close. In just one year, total wealth increased by 13 percent to reach 15.8 trillion dollars. The largest share of this remarkable growth lies in the appreciation of technology companies and the acceleration of innovative ventures.

INCREASE IN NEW TECH WEALTH IN RECENT YEARS

As of 2025, 196 new billionaires emerged, largely from technology, finance, and industrial companies based in the US and China, and these regions led the way in wealth growth once again. The total wealth of billionaires in the US rose by 18 percent to 6.9 trillion dollars. In China, the growth rate exceeded 22 percent. In Europe, however, wealth growth remained relatively more limited.

Another element highlighted in the report is large-scale wealth transfers. 91 people became billionaires for the first time through inheritance. Over the next 15 years, approximately 5.9 trillion dollars in wealth is expected to change hands; this represents one of the largest wealth transfers of the recent period.

MAJOR RISKS ON THE BILLIONAIRES' AGENDA

66 percent of the billionaires participating in the survey consider changes in customs tariffs, 63 percent consider the possibility of increasing geopolitical conflict, and 59 percent consider political uncertainty among the main threats for 2026.

Looking at it regionally, while billionaires in Asia-Pacific place greater importance on customs and tariff risks, those in the Americas prioritize inflation and global political tensions.

TRANSFORMATION IN INVESTMENT STRATEGIES

Although North America remains a leading investment destination for global wealth, it is reported that interest in the region has partially decreased compared to last year. It is noted that Europe and the Asia-Pacific region stand out with their attractiveness in emerging market opportunities and infrastructure investments.

Billionaires plan to increase the weight of emerging market stocks and especially infrastructure projects in their portfolios. Gold and precious metals also continue to be important tools for portfolio diversification.

LONGEVITY AND SUSTAINABILITY CONCERNS

Another finding that has drawn attention recently is the change in life expectancy among billionaires. 81 percent of participants anticipate living a longer life compared to 10 years ago. This increase in longevity brings with it a series of structural adjustments, ranging from estate planning to the restructuring of family offices. The focus has shifted from merely growing wealth to how that wealth will be protected and under what conditions it will be transferred to the next generation.

In conclusion, although the wealth of billionaires worldwide has reached a historic peak, the real struggle for the rich is evolving toward protecting and managing existing assets due to rising geopolitical risks and impending major wealth transfers. It appears that we are entering a new era where sustainability is prioritized over earnings.
