Attention those who changed jobs in 2023! What you need to do to avoid a tax surprise

Certain steps are important for those who want to avoid tax debt or benefit from tax refunds. In particular, there are some points that individuals who have changed workplaces or transitioned between companies under the same employer need to pay attention to.

Individuals who experienced such a change last year and exceeded certain limits are required to file their tax returns by the end of March. This declaration process is important to ensure that tax obligations are fulfilled accurately and on time.

Here is the article on the subject by Ahmet Kıvanç from HaberTürk:

"When a workplace is changed, the earnings obtained at the previous workplace are not taken into account. The employer at the new workplace deducts the tax calculated by starting from the first tax bracket, as if the employee were receiving wages for the first time that year. The tax office, however, looks at the person's total annual earnings for tax purposes.

If the gross earnings obtained from the second or subsequent employers exceed 150 thousand liras, a tax return must be filed in March of the following year. For this reason, those who changed workplaces last year and whose total earnings from the second or subsequent employers exceeded 150 thousand liras are required to file a tax return by the end of March this year.

Those who do not file a tax return face a tax loss penalty. The statute of limitations for tax debts is five years. When the tax office detects the tax debt arising from 2023 earnings within the next five years, it both imposes a tax loss penalty and collects the tax debt with interest."
