Bad news for smokers: Massive price hike on all cigarettes is imminent

Inflation, which has risen due to the impact of economic policies, is causing the tax burden on citizens to increase even further. With the inflation data that TÜİK will announce on July 3, the inflation difference for the first half of the year and the resulting increase in the Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV) will become clear.

According to the inflation rates for the first five months of the year, a 12.92 percent increase in the ÖTV has been finalized for July. This increase will be directly reflected in cigarette prices.

INCREASE EXPECTED IN CIGARETTE PRICES

Currently, the most affordable cigarettes on the market start at 75 TL, while the prices of popular brands range between 90 and 100 liras. With the decision published in the Official Gazette on March 15, 2025, the Special Consumption Tax rate on cigarettes and tobacco products was reduced from 53.5 percent to 50 percent, while the fixed tax was increased to 10.50 liras.

Following these changes, even if June inflation comes in at zero, 90-lira cigarettes will receive an ÖTV hike of over 5 liras. Manufacturing companies are expected to reflect this increase in product prices, and updates are expected to be made to the price lists of all cigarette brands in the first week of July.
