Banking giant decides to close hundreds of branches

Lloyds Banking Group, one of the UK's major financial institutions, has announced the closure of a total of 233 branches under its Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland brands. It was announced that the branch closures will be carried out in phases until the end of 2026.

The bank stated that the significant decrease in the number of customers visiting branches and the shift of customers toward digital banking due to technological advancements were influential in this decision. Having undergone a significant transformation in the banking sector by closing approximately 1,600 branches in the country since 2015, Lloyds also stated that an additional 12 branches will be closed at the beginning of 2027.

Bank management announced that they are aware that the closure of branches may have negative effects, especially for customers who do not prefer digital channels or have limited access. For this reason, it was reported that face-to-face service will continue to be provided to customers in the regions where the closed branches were located through more than 170 mobile "community bankers." Additionally, it was announced that various banking services will be provided through thousands of Post Office and PayPoint locations across the country to ensure that banking transactions can continue without interruption.

In financial circles, this decision is considered an important example of the acceleration of digitalization in the banking sector and the changing approach to branch-focused services.
