Bankruptcy process initiated: All flights completely canceled

Spirit Airlines, one of the major low-cost airlines in the US, has permanently ceased all operations as of May 2, 2026. In a statement released by the company, the decision was announced to the public with the following words: "As of May 2, 2026, we have initiated the process of winding down our operations, effective immediately. We make this decision with great sadness."

Spirit Airlines also stated that they are proud of the innovations they brought to the industry with the ultra-low-cost business model they have implemented for 34 years, emphasizing that they had hoped to serve their guests for many more years. As part of the termination of operations, the company informed both passengers and suppliers about the process and announced that ticket refund procedures have been initiated. Reminding that all flights have been canceled and that passengers should not go to the airport, the statement also announced that customer service is no longer operational.

Spirit Airlines Chief Executive Officer Dave Davis said that the sharp and persistent increases in fuel prices in the global market drove the company to this point. Stating that it was no longer possible for the company to continue under current conditions, Davis said, "Hundreds of millions of dollars in additional liquidity were needed to keep the business running, and we could not secure it. This is extremely sad."

It was noted that the US administration had recently offered a 500 million dollar loan to Spirit Airlines; however, no results were achieved in the subsequent negotiations with bondholders regarding a government-backed rescue package.

It was noted that Spirit's withdrawal from the sector marks the first time in decades that a major airline has been wiped out of the market in the US. It was reported that some major American air carriers have taken action to support the stranded Spirit passengers, with United Airlines, American Airlines, and Frontier Airlines among those companies.

Additionally, concerns that Spirit Airlines' complete withdrawal could lead to an increase in airline ticket prices in a sector already going through a difficult period due to the war in Iran and rising costs at a global level were voiced loudly in the US press.
