Çerkezoğlu: We do not want to chase numbers for the minimum wage, we want a minimum wage that allows for a humane life

Gathering at Ata Park, DİSK members marched to the Halit Paşa Junction with slogans of "We want justice in income, justice in taxes."

In her statement following the march, Çerkezoğlu said that as DİSK, they have been carrying out a struggle for days, starting from workplaces and extending to the public squares, for justice in income and taxes, and for a wage that allows for a humane life.

Arguing that there should be a system where everyone pays taxes according to their ability, Çerkezoğlu expressed that they are striving for a fair tax system where those who earn less pay less and those who earn more pay more.

Çerkezoğlu stated that the main opposition party has brought the 5-point legislative proposal for a fair tax system prepared by DİSK to the agenda of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), and that they are following the process.

Stating that more than half of the workers in Turkey, and 70 percent of those in the private sector, work for the minimum wage, Çerkezoğlu emphasized that as DİSK, they have been fighting for years for a minimum wage that allows for a humane life.

Çerkezoğlu also stated that as DİSK, they will not be announcing a specific figure for the minimum wage this year, adding, "We do not want to chase numbers for the minimum wage; we want a minimum wage that allows for a humane life. We say that until inflation falls to single digits, the minimum wage should be adjusted four times a year."

DİSK President Çerkezoğlu added that the lowest pension should also be raised to at least the level of the minimum wage.
