Cevdet Yılmaz passes the buck to ministries! New move from CHP for a mid-year minimum wage hike

The Republican People's Party (CHP) has begun preparations for a legislative proposal aimed at implementing a mid-year increase in the minimum wage. CHP Chairman Özgür Özel announced that, in this context, they will hold meetings with DİSK and TİSK tomorrow, and will visit Türk-İş and Hak-İş on Friday.

According to a report by Cumhuriyet, CHP officials emphasized that the minimum wage has fallen below the hunger threshold and stated that they would formulate a figure and a legislative proposal following consultations with employer and employee representatives. The proposal will also include incentive payments for employers and is planned to be announced in mid-June.

In Parliament, opposition deputies are submitting motions to the government regarding the minimum wage, which has been eroded by inflation, and are questioning what will be done about the issue. In response to these motions, Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz stated that Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan and Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek are responsible.

Minister Mehmet Şimşek responded to questions regarding the minimum wage by stating that they are working to ensure price stability and reduce inflation to single digits. However, he did not directly answer questions regarding a potential hike in line with the inflation rate.

Şimşek stated that with the latest increases, the lowest civil servant salary has risen by 240 percent, the lowest pension by 571 percent, and the minimum wage by 266 percent since 2002. Meanwhile, Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan has left motions on this subject unanswered for six months.
