Chinese President Xi states they want to deepen cooperation with Russia
In a meeting with Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian Parliament, who is visiting his country, Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that they want to deepen the "good neighborly relations based on lasting friendship" and "comprehensive strategic cooperation" between the two countries.
According to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Xi reiterated the commitments regarding bilateral relations that he expressed during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Beijing in October.
Xi stated, "China is ready to work with Russia to deepen good neighborly relations based on lasting friendship and comprehensive strategic cooperation between the two countries."
Emphasizing that China and Russia "share broad common interests," Xi highlighted that the work of special committees and the sharing of experience between the legislative bodies of the two countries play an important role in the development of the legal framework for their relations.
Xi pointed out the need for legal safeguards to "create synergy" between China's Belt and Road Initiative and the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union.
Volodin also stated that in line with the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, they aim to "deepen friendship and political trust between the peoples" by strengthening relations between legislative bodies and political parties.
RELATIONS BETWEEN LEGISLATIVE BODIES AND POLITICAL PARTIES
Volodin, who held talks in Beijing during a three-day visit with a delegation of Russian parliamentarians, also met with Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's legislative body.
During the meeting, Volodin expressed that the State Duma is ready to work with the National People's Congress to establish legal safeguards that will promote the development of bilateral relations and practical cooperation.
On the other hand, the 10th Dialogue Mechanism Meeting of the ruling parties of China and Russia, the Communist Party of China and the United Russia Party, was also held in Beijing this week.
In a written message sent to the meeting, Xi expressed his belief that dialogue and cooperation between the ruling parties would make a positive contribution to strengthening political trust between the two countries.
RAPPROCHEMENT BETWEEN CHINA AND RUSSIA
At a time when geostrategic competition with the US and regional tensions are increasing, it is observed that China's relations are developing with Russia, which is facing similar challenges due to the war in Ukraine.
The Chinese leader made his first foreign visit to Russia after being re-elected as president at the National People's Congress held in March, extending his rule to a third term.
During the visit, addressing Putin, Xi had used the expression, "The world is currently going through a change that is seen once in a century, and we are the ones driving this change."
During the visit, a consensus was reached on elevating relations to a new dimension, and emphasis was placed on expanding strategic cooperation between Beijing and Moscow on a global scale.
The Russian leader also visited China on October 18-20 to attend the 3rd Belt and Road Forum held in Beijing.
During the visit, Xi gave Putin the message that relations with Russia are "not a matter of daily interest but a long-term commitment," and emphasized that China will continue to add new dimensions to practical cooperation with Russia, "with a sensitive view of the trend of the times" and "keeping the fundamental interests of the two peoples in mind."
