Debt burden rising, enforcement files at record levels
As debts in Turkey rise rapidly, the number of files in enforcement offices has increased by 1 million 519 thousand in the last year, reaching 23.6 million. Debts are growing across a wide spectrum, from SMEs to the agricultural sector.
Economic difficulties in Turkey continue to increase the debt burden.
According to a report by Mustafa Çakır from Cumhuriyet, while the debts of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) to banks have exceeded 5 trillion liras, the debts of the agricultural sector have also crossed the 1 trillion lira threshold for the first time. Meanwhile, citizens' personal loan and credit card debts have reached 4.8 trillion liras. This situation has led to an increase in the number of files arriving at enforcement offices.
According to the economic report prepared by the CHP parliamentary group, the debts of SMEs to the banking sector increased by 201 billion liras in April, rising to 5 trillion 33 billion liras. In the same period, the debts of SMEs that were placed under enforcement proceedings because they could not be paid increased by 29.4 billion liras to 115.9 billion liras.
A similar situation exists in the agricultural sector. In April, the agricultural sector's loan debts to banks increased by 38.4 billion liras, reaching 1 trillion 9 billion liras. In the first four months of the year, these debts increased by 140 billion liras. The sector's debts under enforcement proceedings increased by 74.8 percent to 6.3 billion liras.
Citizens' personal loan and credit card debts to banks and financial institutions increased by 114.8 billion liras in the week of May 23-30, rising to 4 trillion 684 billion liras. The number of new files received by enforcement offices via UYAP between January 1 and June 6 increased by 5.9 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching 4 million 336 thousand. In the same period, 2 million 965 thousand files were concluded or removed from processing. As of June 6, the total number of pending files in enforcement offices rose to 23 million 630 thousand.
