Difficult harvest in the city of ruins: Carrots sold from the field for 5 TL to all corners of Turkey

In Hatay, which was devastated by the disaster of the century, the wounds of the earthquake are being healed. The harvest has begun in the fertile Amik Plain, where various fruits and vegetables are grown, as the yellow carrots have reached the extraction stage. Despite the cold weather, agricultural laborers in the Kırıkhan district are continuing their grueling work. Yellow carrots, which are sold from Hatay to all 81 provinces of Turkey, are sold to the domestic market for 5 TL from the field.

Stating that they farm on approximately 10 thousand decares of land, Ahmet Donat noted that the carrots sold for 5 TL go up to 15 TL in chain supermarkets, saying, “We have started the yellow carrot harvest. We are working on approximately 10 thousand decares of land. A large part of this consists of yellow and black carrots. We are trying to deliver the yellow carrots to the domestic market; primarily to Ankara, Istanbul, Mersin, and Diyarbakır, and to all 81 provinces as much as we can. Our harvests and yields are in good condition. We are in the earthquake zone and are trying to develop; we are currently selling our yellow carrots for 5 TL. These prices in chain supermarkets go up to 11-12-15 TL. This is our biggest problem; when it leaves us and reaches the end consumer, it is consumed at 15 TL,” he said.
Agricultural laborer Mahmut Ekinci stated that they are continuing their struggle to earn their daily bread under difficult conditions, saying, “We are in the Kırıkhan district, we are packaging carrots. Our job is difficult, the weather is cold. We are in the water in winter. The field is harder, this place is a bit more comfortable compared to that,” he said.
