Disturbing facts... Millions of young people are neither studying nor working!
The second-quarter labor force statistics announced by TÜİK have laid bare the reality of youth unemployment and lack of education. Out of 24 million young people between the ages of 15 and 34, 6.5 million are neither in education nor in employment. In other words, 27 out of every 100 young people are 'doing nothing.'
The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has announced its "Labor Force Statistics" for the second quarter of the year, covering April, May, and June. According to the data, the number of unemployed persons aged 15 and over increased by 106 thousand compared to the previous quarter, reaching 3 million 34 thousand. The unemployment rate rose by 0.3 percentage points to 8.6 percent. The unemployment rate was 7.0 percent for men and 11.6 percent for women.
6.5 MILLION YOUNG PEOPLE ARE NEET
According to data highlighted by Ekonomim columnist Alaattin Aktaş, the youth population between the ages of 15 and 34 stands at 24 million. However, 6.5 million of this group are neither continuing their education nor working in any job. In short, they fall into the NEET category, which stands for "Not in Education, Employment, or Training."
27 OUT OF 100 YOUNG PEOPLE ARE "DOING NOTHING"
According to Aktaş's calculations, 27 percent of young people are idle. This rate is distributed by age group as follows:
In the 15-24 age group, the NEET rate is 22.1%
In the 25-29 age group, it is 31.3%
In the 30-34 age group, it is 31.5%
This means that as age increases, the rate of young people who are neither in education nor in employment also increases.
PARTIAL RECOVERY AFTER THE PANDEMIC
When looking at the data from the last five years, the NEET rate shows some improvement compared to 2021. However, Aktaş pointed out that the rates were extraordinarily high at that time due to the impact of the pandemic, emphasizing that today's figures still represent a serious problem.
