Doubled compared to last year: Citizens spent June using cards

The Interbank Card Center (BKM) has announced the card payment data for June. As of June, the number of credit cards in Turkey reached 124.1 million, the number of debit cards reached 191.8 million, and the number of prepaid cards reached 96 million.

Compared to June 2023, there was a 15 percent increase in the number of credit cards, a 7 percent increase in the number of debit cards, and a 20 percent increase in the number of prepaid cards. The total number of cards reached 411.9 million, showing a 12 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

CARD PAYMENT AMOUNT INCREASED BY 98 PERCENT

The total payment amount made with credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards in June increased by 98 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 1 trillion 267.6 billion TL. While 1 trillion 56.8 billion TL of card payments were made with credit cards, 186.2 billion TL was made with debit cards, and 24.6 billion TL was made with prepaid cards.

The growth rate for payments made with credit cards compared to the same period of the previous year was 105 percent, 65 percent for payments made with debit cards, and 132 percent for payments made with prepaid cards.

Transaction volume increased by 17 percent

The total number of card payments made in June increased by 17 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 1.55 billion transactions. While 887.8 million of the card payments were made with credit cards, 553.7 million were made with debit cards, and 110.5 million were made with prepaid cards. The growth rate in the number of payments made with credit cards was 21 percent compared to the same period last year, 9 percent for payments made with debit cards, and 36 percent for payments made with prepaid cards.

ONLINE CARD PAYMENTS SKYROCKETED

Online card payments increased by 101 percent compared to the same period last year, rising to 349.7 billion TL. The share of online card payments in the total was 27 percent.

The number of online card payments increased by 11 percent compared to the same period last year, rising to 207.2 million transactions. The share of online card payments in the total was 14 percent.

The number of contactless payments made with cards increased by 28 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching 1,027.5 million transactions. The contactless payment amount increased by 125 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching 409.4 billion TL. In June, approximately 4 out of every 5 in-store card payments were made contactlessly.
