EU countries support Georgieva for IMF leadership

Belgian Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem made a statement regarding the topics discussed at the meeting of European Union (EU) finance ministers in Brussels.

Reminding that Georgieva announced last week that she wants to serve a second term in the IMF leadership, Peteghem said that all EU countries support Georgieva today. Peteghem pointed out that Georgieva has shown strong leadership in all crises experienced in recent years and that they trust her.

Explaining that the process will continue at the IMF Executive Board, Peteghem expressed that they are pleased to support Georgieva for a second term as president. Georgieva's 5-year term was set to end in September of this year.

Traditionally, the head of the IMF is determined by Europeans.

Born in Bulgaria in 1953, Georgieva previously served as a member of the EU Commission and held senior management positions at the World Bank.
