EU to continue seizing cars arriving from Russia

The European Commission (EC) has announced that vehicles or personal items included on the sanctions list belonging to individuals arriving in member states from Russia by car will be subject to seizure.

European Commission spokesperson Daniel Sheridan Ferrie made statements regarding the implementation of sanctions against Russia during a daily press briefing held in Brussels.

Ferrie recalled that the EU has adopted 11 packages of sanctions against Russia. He reminded that within the scope of these sanctions, an import ban has been imposed on certain products from Russia.

Ferrie stated, "We have an import ban on many products from Russia. These products are on our sanctions list. Cars are subject to the import ban and cannot enter the EU."

Pointing out that the situation regarding the seizure of Russian tourists' cars upon entry into EU countries is not new, Ferrie emphasized that this ban has been in effect for a long time.

Ferrie noted that customs authorities in EU countries must fully comply with the rules, particularly regarding automobiles and valuable items.

11 SANCTIONS PACKAGES ANNOUNCED

The EU has implemented 11 packages of sanctions against Russia to date.

Within this framework, a wide range of restrictions have been applied to Russia, including trade, finance, energy—such as oil and coal—industry, technology, transportation, dual-use goods, luxury goods, and gold. The assets of over a thousand individuals and more than 200 institutions have been frozen.

Under EU sanctions, Russians are prohibited from bringing various items such as automobiles, cosmetics, computers, smartphones, precious stones, and furs with them during tourist visits to member states. These items are confiscated at EU customs.

Ferrie noted that one of the European Commission's duties is to ensure that sanctions are applied uniformly across the EU. For this reason, he explained that they prepare regular guidelines for member states on how to implement the sanctions.

Pointing out that the existing sanctions have not changed, Ferrie said, "EU sanctions aim to deprive Russia of the revenue it needs to finance the war."
