Euro strengthens on hawkish comments and falling energy prices
Following ambitious comments from European policymakers and expected declines in energy prices, the Euro is showing a strong stance against the dollar and the yen today.
Currently, the common currency is hovering near a 15-year high against the yen and remains steady against the dollar even as the dollar strengthens. The chief economist of the European Central Bank expressed the view that inflation is not yet sufficiently under control, which has been a key factor in the Euro's resilience.
Earlier this week, the Euro reached 161.73 against the yen, its highest level since 2008, following the Bank of Japan's decision to maintain short-term interest rates. This move has made the euro-yen pair an attractive bet for investors looking to avoid the risk of intervention in the dollar-yen exchange rate. The Euro also rose 0.5% this week to 87.14 pence.
On Wednesday, Central Bank of Ireland Governor Gabriel Makhlouf suggested that further interest rate hikes should not be ruled out, in a way that markets are not currently expecting. Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel also commented that the final stages of reaching the inflation target could be the most challenging.
There is an increasing focus on potential interest rate cuts by G10 central banks next year. However, many central bankers are pushing back against this speculation. As long as inflation remains above target, policymakers are likely to keep the risk of further tightening alive, especially since a significant drop in market rates could increase inflationary risks.
In other developments, the yen did not gain much from the decline in US Treasury bond yields, with the 10-year rate seeing its lowest close since mid-September. The yen is currently heading toward the 151 level against the dollar and was last seen at 150.99 in Asian morning trading.
While falling oil prices are welcomed in Europe, they have put pressure on commodity-linked currencies such as the Australian and New Zealand dollars and the Canadian dollar. The Australian dollar fell 0.5% overnight and was last at $0.6405, just above its 50-day moving average. While the central bank appeared to raise the bar for further hikes after raising interest rates on Tuesday, the currency is bracing for its largest weekly drop since June. The New Zealand dollar also saw a modest decline overnight to $0.5910.
Former Italian Prime Minister and former ECB president Mario Draghi stated at a Financial Times conference that Europe is almost certainly heading toward a recession and that high energy costs are a contributing factor. Despite this, Brent crude oil futures have fallen 12% in the last two weeks. Europe's record gas stocks continue to rise as a warm autumn delays the start of heating demand, and high prices discourage industrial use while encouraging imports.
In Asia, the Chinese yuan reached a two-month high in overnight offshore trading after Chinese authorities requested that Ping An Insurance Group acquire a majority stake in the troubled real estate developer Country Garden. Consumer prices in China fell in October, triggering expectations that interest rates would be lowered.
Michael Wan, a currency analyst at MUFG in Singapore, said, "Given the soft inflation pressures and the still-narrow economic recovery, there are some growing market expectations for further interest rate cuts by the Chinese central bank."
In the Middle East, despite close-quarters fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas militants in Gaza, the shekel has returned to its pre-war levels of 3.83 against the dollar, aided by heavy dollar selling by the Bank of Israel. The market is now awaiting a speech by Fed Chair Jerome Powell.
