Famous burger chain reduces number of branches

Fuddruckers, a long-standing player in the burger world, began operations in 1979 in San Antonio, Texas, founded by Phil Romano. The chain set out to grow by moving away from the classic fast-food concept, offering guests a unique experience with the ability to customize their burgers as they wished and freshly baked buns. It also stood out in the sector with features such as unlimited cheese sauce.

Just three years after its founding, the company reached 20 separate locations across Texas and went public in 1983. By 1988, the number of branches had risen to 150, marking one of its fastest periods of growth. During those years, Fuddruckers expanded to between 200 and 500 locations worldwide, becoming a significant global brand.

However, the global economic crisis that erupted in 2008 severely impacted restaurant chains. As a result of rising costs and consumers turning to more affordable options, the company's revenues began to decline. When the parent company under which Fuddruckers operated filed for bankruptcy protection in 2010, many branches were forced to close their doors.

Following this period, an agreement was reached for the chain to be acquired by the company Luby’s for 61 million dollars. However, the difficult economic conditions were not fully overcome.

While the restaurant sector experienced global turmoil during the COVID-19 pandemic, Fuddruckers was also forced to shrink rapidly, and the number of branches decreased to 80. The liquidation decision made by Luby’s in 2020 became a major turning point for the future of the chain.

In 2021, Nicholas Perkins, owner of Black Titan Franchise Systems, purchased all of the remaining 14 branches. Although Perkins' goal was to revitalize the brand, despite all the steps taken, Fuddruckers today serves with only 44 branches worldwide.

Thus, the chain, which became a symbol of an era, is currently struggling to regain its footing in the sector.
