Food prices have been rising continuously for 54 months: 6.9% increase in November

In November 2024, food prices increased by 6.9% compared to the previous month, and annual food inflation rose to 67.1%. With the increase continuing for 54 months, prices have risen up to 14 times. Fruit prices saw the highest increase in November, rising by 30%.

Food prices have been rising continuously for 54 months: 6.9% increase in November

Inflation in basic food prices in Turkey is constantly on the agenda. According to the November food price index report prepared by the United Public Workers Confederation (Birleşik Kamu-İş), food prices have been rising continuously for 54 months, since June 2020. During this period, the increase in prices has reached 14 times. While fruit prices saw the highest increase in November, the annual food inflation rate reached 67.1%.

INCREASE COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS MONTH REACHED 6.9%

In November 2024, food prices increased by 6.9% compared to the previous month, while an increase of 67.1% was observed compared to the same month last year. The price increases detailed in the report were as follows:

“Prices in all food expenditure groups except dairy products showed increases at various rates compared to the previous month. In November, while bread-rice-flour-bulgur prices increased by an average of 4.9% compared to the previous month, there was a 4% rise in meat and fish group prices. Prices in the milk, dairy products, and egg group decreased by 0.8% compared to the previous month. Oil expenditures increased by 5.2%.”

FRUIT PRICES INCREASED BY 30%

In November, when fruit prices rose by 30.2%, vegetable prices also saw an increase of 14.3% compared to the previous month. In November, when pulse prices increased by 6% compared to the previous month, other food prices consisting of processed food items such as tomato paste, olives, honey, tea, salt, and similar products rose by 3.7%.

To purchase the food basket created from 64 food items selected according to current food consumption habits, one had to pay 6.9% more in November compared to the previous month.

11-MONTH FOOD INFLATION IS 57.3%

A total increase of 57.3% was observed in food prices in the first eleven months of this year. Compared to the prices in December of last year, bread-rice-flour-bulgur-pasta prices rose by 38.6%, meat-fish by 35.7%, milk, dairy products, and egg prices by 24.4%, oil prices by 57.4%, fruit prices by 145.2%, vegetable prices by 172.1%, pulse prices by 27.8%, and the prices of other products by 36.3%.

ANNUAL FOOD PRICE INFLATION IS 67.1%

In November, compared to the same month last year, there were increases of 44.7% in bread, flour, bulgur, and pasta prices, 40.8% in meat-fish prices, and 28.4% in milk, dairy products, and egg prices.

Compared to a year ago, oil prices increased by 61.9%. Fruit prices showed an increase of 142.4%, and vegetable prices by 253.4%. Pulse prices rose by 32.1% over the last year, and other food prices by 39.6%. Annual inflation in food prices increased by 67.1%.
