Food prices soared during Ramadan: Sharp hikes in meat and pulses

Despite all warnings issued during the month of Ramadan, it has been reported that price increases in red and white meat as well as pulses have reached 80 percent. While the rate of price hikes was announced through the Central Bank's analysis, notable high increases were also observed in vegetable and fruit prices.

In the report published on the Central Bank's "Merkezin Güncesi" blog, it was stated that unprocessed food prices rose rapidly during Ramadan, while the increase in processed foods remained lower. Calls had been made to markets not to raise prices during the Ramadan period, and special inspections had been carried out. However, it emerged that high price increases occurred in unprocessed food products such as meat, vegetables, and fruits.

PRICE HIKES REACHED 80 PERCENT

The Central Bank's study also included a timeline regarding meat and chicken prices. According to the chart, a significant increase in meat and chicken prices was observed as soon as the month of Ramadan began, with the price increase in chicken meat rising to around 75 percent in the first week of Ramadan.

In red meat, the increase that began before Ramadan accelerated, with a rise of approximately 65 points seen in the first few days. This indicates an increase of approximately 80 percent.

For pulses, the price increase was measured at around 50 percent. According to the study, pulse prices saw a lower rate of increase compared to meat and chicken prices.
