Bad news for those thinking of buying a car: Price hikes exceeding 500,000 TL on many vehicles with the additional tax!
The additional automotive tax regulations, published in the Official Gazette on September 22 under the signature of AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, have come into effect today. Consequently, some car models will see price increases exceeding 500,000 Turkish Lira.
Presidential Decree No. 10436, which includes additional financial obligations for automotive imports, was published in the Official Gazette on September 22, 2025. The 60-day compliance period granted for the regulation ended on Friday, November 21, at 23:59.
As of today, new and higher taxes have begun to be applied to vehicles arriving from countries outside the scope of the EU and Free Trade Agreements.
The new implementation introduces additional financial burdens covering all segments on top of the existing 10 percent customs duty.
AT LEAST 25 PERCENT ADDITIONAL COST IS COMING
According to the new system, an additional tax of 25 percent or a minimum of 6,000 dollars is foreseen for gasoline and diesel cars, 25 percent or at least 6,000 dollars for hybrid cars, and an additional obligation of 30 percent or at least 7,000 dollars for plug-in hybrid models.
For electric vehicles, this rate rises to 30 percent or at least 8,500 dollars.
This regulation will directly increase the prices of vehicles coming to Turkey from major automobile exporting countries such as China, Japan, Mexico, and South Africa.
MARKET MODEL LOSSES AND PRICE INCREASES EXPECTED
The new tax burdens may lead to the withdrawal of some models from the Turkish market, delays in new vehicle arrivals, or a significant decrease in competitiveness.
The requirement for at least 20 authorized service centers across 7 regions, especially introduced for electric vehicles, makes import processes even more difficult. For this reason, it is stated that the market advantage of gasoline and diesel vehicles will increase in the short term.
The regulation most affects Japanese-made vehicles, and therefore, direct increases are expected in the list prices of many models that are in high demand in Turkey.
PRICE HIKES EXCEEDING 500,000 TL ON THE AGENDA
For a car with a tax base of 1 million TL, the additional tax resulting from the new regulation rises to approximately 250,000 TL. This increase, together with the Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV) and Value Added Tax (KDV), can reach a total of up to 540,000 TL.
Because the price difference multiplies as the vehicle's tax base increases, it is predicted that price hikes for some models will exceed 500,000 TL.
MODELS EXPECTED TO SEE PRICE INCREASES
Nissan X-Trail (e-POWER / e-4ORCE)
Subaru Forester e-BOXER
Subaru Crosstrek (XV)
Suzuki Jimny
Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
Honda Jazz e:HEV
Honda HR-V e:HEV
