Increase in deposit volume
The total deposit volume in Turkey's banking sector recorded a significant increase in the week of February 13, exceeding 29 trillion liras. While growth was observed in both Turkish lira and foreign currency accounts, consumer loans also continued to rise.
Total bank deposits in Turkey increased by 0.8 percent in the week ending February 13 compared to the previous week, reaching 29 trillion 93 billion 356 million liras. The increase in deposits during this period exceeded 222 billion liras.
Deposits in both Turkish lira and foreign currency showed a weekly increase. TL-denominated deposits in banks rose by 2.2 percent compared to the previous week, surpassing 15 trillion 329 billion liras. Foreign currency deposits also recorded an increase of 0.6 percent, reaching 10 trillion 189 billion liras.
The total volume of foreign currency deposits stood at 272 billion 516 million dollars during the same period, with more than 234 billion dollars of this amount held in accounts belonging to domestic residents. However, when adjusted for parity effects, there was a decrease of approximately 1 billion dollars in the foreign currency deposits of domestic residents.
Activity continued on the lending side. Consumer loans to domestic residents increased by 1.5 percent on a weekly basis, reaching 5 trillion 941 billion liras and setting a new record. Individual credit cards accounted for the largest share of consumer loans, followed by personal, housing, and auto loans; in total, housing loans reached 700 billion liras, while personal loans reached 2 trillion 270 billion liras.
The total loan volume of the banking sector, including the Central Bank, also rose by approximately 194 billion liras during the week in question, reaching 23 trillion 270 billion liras.
