Inflation rises in Germany

Annual inflation in Germany rose to 3.7 percent in December 2023 due to base effects stemming from energy relief measures. According to preliminary data released by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis), annual inflation, which was 3.2 percent in November 2023, climbed to 3.7 percent in December. This marks the first increase in the country's inflation rate after five months of decline. On a monthly basis, inflation rose by 0.1 percent.

The EU-harmonized CPI also increased by 0.2 percent compared to the previous month and by 3.8 percent on an annual basis in December 2023. Destatis stated that the rise in inflation in December 2023 was influenced by the federal government's aid in December 2022 to help citizens pay their natural gas and other heating bills. These subsidies were considered an effort to provide relief to companies and consumers against rising energy prices caused by the Russia-Ukraine war.

Energy and food remain among the key drivers of inflation in Germany. Food prices increased by 4.5 percent in December 2023 compared to the same period the previous year, while energy products rose by 4.1 percent. The inflation rate excluding energy and food stood at 3.5 percent.

These inflation figures, coupled with the resurgence of inflation in Germany, Europe's largest economy, have dampened investor hopes that the European Central Bank might lower interest rates. According to Destatis, the average annual inflation rate in Germany for the entirety of 2023 was recorded at 5.9 percent. Last year, inflation had reached its highest level since 1951 at 7.9 percent.
