IPA: Monthly expenses for a student in Istanbul have exceeded the minimum wage

IPA: Monthly expenses for a student in Istanbul have exceeded the minimum wage

The Istanbul Planning Agency (IPA), which researched the monthly cost of living for university students studying in Istanbul, conducted the study based on September 2023 data.

It was stated that the calculation was made using primary and secondary data regarding basic expenditure items that can be defined as elements constituting the cost of living specific to student life, such as housing, grocery and dining out expenses, utility bills, culture and arts, stationery, personal care, and transportation expenses.

In its statement, the Istanbul Planning Agency (IPA) said, "While housing is the largest expense item for students in large cities, many needs of young people in higher education have become more costly along with rising inflation rates."

According to the results of the IPA's Student Cost of Living Research; the cost of living for a university student staying in a private dormitory has nearly doubled in just one year. For a student living in a three-person household, the monthly cost has increased by 134 percent in one year, rising from 5,357 TL to 12,535 TL, exceeding the minimum wage.

According to the research; while the monthly housing expenditure of a student staying in a private dormitory was 3,300 TL in the 2022-2023 academic year, this figure has risen to 10,360 TL in the current period.

The housing expenditure of a student living in a rented house with 2 other people was 1,900 TL last year, while it has risen to 6,250 TL this year. The grocery expenditure, which is another of the highest monthly items, was 550 TL for a student staying in a dormitory last year, while this year's grocery and dining out expenditure for the same student has risen to 2,287 TL. A student living in a house who allocated 1,780 TL to this item last year has to allocate 3,797 TL this year.
