Is Turkey a target in Trump's additional tariff threat? Mehmet Şimşek responds: 'We are already at a high tariff standard'

United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump is threatening to impose additional customs duties on many countries, primarily Canada, Mexico, China, and the European Union, with the stated goal of reshaping global trade policies.

Trump had imposed additional customs duties on Turkish steel during his first presidential term. However, it is not yet clear whether a similar tax will be applied to Turkey during his second term.

Speaking at the Bloomberg Summit, Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek stated that they do not expect Turkey to be targeted within the scope of these tariffs.

"WE ARE ALREADY AT A HIGH TARIFF STANDARD"

Şimşek stated, "We are already at a high tariff standard. Therefore, we do not think we will be a target for U.S. customs duties."

Making statements regarding the economic agenda at the summit, Şimşek noted that the fight against inflation is their most important priority, adding, "I understand the doubts in the market, but inflation will fall. We are not currently experiencing any major structural problems due to movements in the TL. We must be more selective in consumer loans, and we are."

Furthermore, expressing that the Turkish economy is affected by growth trends in Europe, Şimşek stated that they hope for the resolution of structural problems occurring on the continent.
