Mehmet Şimşek's much-discussed tax message

Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek shared his expectations regarding the disinflation process during his presentation on his Ministry's 2026 budget at the TBMM Planning and Budget Committee. Şimşek stated that they expect a permanent downward trend in inflation as a result of the policies implemented.

Şimşek said, "We anticipate that the disinflation process will continue. We have shaped our budget policies within this framework."

TAX AND FEE INCREASES MAY BE LOWER

Minister Şimşek also made notable statements regarding updates to taxes and fees. He said that instead of the revaluation rate, a lower increase in line with inflation targets and budget possibilities is on the agenda.

Şimşek stated, "When determining the increase rates for taxes and fees, we will take into account inflation targets and the budget's possibilities, not the revaluation rate."

"THE TAX BURDEN IS NOT HIGH"

Evaluating the tax burden in Turkey, Şimşek argued that, contrary to general opinion, the tax burden is not high according to international standards, saying, "Contrary to popular belief, our tax burden is not high according to international comparisons. However, our main problem is that direct taxes are not at a sufficient level."
