According to a report by CNBC, a source who requested anonymity because the discussions are private stated that Microsoft, Tiger Global, and venture capital firm Thrive Capital want to bring Altman back to his position.

A source familiar with the matter told CNBC that Sequoia Capital is also in contact with Altman. The source stated that Sequoia supports Altman and former OpenAI president Greg Brockman in whatever they decide to do next, whether it is returning to OpenAI or launching a new venture. The individual also noted that Sequoia has informed Microsoft that it will support efforts to bring back Altman and Brockman.

The initial report regarding the discussions to bring back Altman was published by The Verge. Citing a source, the publication stated that Altman is "ambivalent" about returning and would demand governance changes.

In a statement released by OpenAI, it was announced that the company's board of directors had decided that Sam Altman would step down as CEO and leave the board.

The statement noted that the company's Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, had been appointed as interim CEO to replace Altman.

The statement, which noted that Altman's departure followed a review process conducted by the board of directors, stated that Altman was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, which hindered his ability to exercise his responsibilities.
