Minister Bayraktar signals price hikes for electricity and natural gas! Here is the rate being discussed behind the scenes...
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar has signaled that price adjustments for electricity and natural gas could be on the agenda in April. In industry circles, the possibility of a 20 percent hike is being discussed.
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar made assessments regarding natural gas and electricity prices. Emphasizing the additional costs caused by recent volatility in global energy markets and ongoing wars, Bayraktar explained the direct effects of these increases on Turkey. Minister Bayraktar stated, "A 1-dollar increase per barrel costs Turkey 400 million dollars. We have a support program for natural gas and electricity that, excluding VAT, amounts to approximately 305 billion dollars for the 2026 budget. If these developments continue, this figure will reach approximately 925 billion dollars by the end of the year."
Bayraktar also noted that they do not impose direct price hikes on citizens, pointing out that comprehensive support programs are continuing. He used the expression, "Ultimately, we have had a support program for 5-6 years. Price adjustments are made by looking at global developments. There is nothing we are doing directly."
Regarding the possibility of an update to prices, the Minister pointed to April, stating, "Taking these developments into account, we may conduct an evaluation for both natural gas and electricity within the month of April."
Journalist Olcay Aydilek, who closely monitors developments in the sector, reported in a message shared on his social media account that energy management has submitted the latest data regarding electricity and natural gas tariffs to the economic management. Aydilek's post highlighted the following: "The April 1st tariff for electricity and natural gas! It is being discussed that energy management has submitted the latest data regarding electricity and gas to the economic management. The economic management will determine the steps to be taken. Estimates are concentrated on a 20 percent hike. All eyes will be on EMRA for electricity and BOTAŞ for gas."
