Minister Bayraktar: Turkey’s energy import dependency fell to 67.8 percent in 2022

The 15th IICEC Conference, held this year under the theme 'Changing Energy Geopolitics and the Climate Crisis in the World,' took place with the participation of Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar. Making significant statements regarding energy efficiency at the meeting, Bayraktar said, “Although we have achieved a 30 percent reduction in our energy intensity over the last 21 years, Turkey’s energy demand has doubled. We expect it to increase by another factor of 1 in the next 20 years. In 2022, Turkey’s energy import dependency fell to 67.8 percent. Our goal with the national energy plan is to eliminate this dependency within the next 30 years and make the country net-zero emission.”

Stating that the world needs 6 trillion dollars annually for a sustainable energy transition, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said, “As Turkey, we say this: A successful energy transition must be achieved through smarter policy. As Turkey, we are shaping our energy policies in line with a 2050 net-zero emission economy by contributing to global supply diversity and reducing our import dependency without compromising supply security. Although we have achieved a 30 percent reduction in our energy intensity over the last 21 years, Turkey’s energy demand has doubled. We expect it to increase by another factor of 1 in the next 20 years. In 2022, Turkey’s energy import dependency fell to 67.8 percent. Our goal with the national energy plan is to eliminate this dependency within the next 30 years and make the country net-zero emission. We intend to utilize our entire renewable energy potential to achieve this transformation in our energy policies. Looking specifically at electricity, we project that demand will be around 515 terawatt-hours in 2035. While meeting this high demand, we want to increase the share of renewable energy in total energy production to 55 percent and its share in installed capacity to 65 percent,” he said.

Emphasizing that there is a capacity issue for those who want to invest in the energy sector, Minister Bayraktar said, “10 thousand megawatts of licensed products have been allocated in the field of renewable energy. Our industrialists hold permits for approximately 26 thousand megawatts to make investments to meet their own consumption. There is 5,400 megawatts of connection capacity. There is 33 thousand megawatts of storage-based renewable energy. When we add these up, a capacity of 76 thousand megawatts has been allocated. A prerequisite for a sustainable energy transition is the strengthening of the electricity grid. We will invest 10 billion dollars in the electricity transmission grid over the next 7-8 years,” he said.

Expressing that they started oil production following the discovery in the Gabar mountains in 2022, Minister Bayraktar stated, “As of today, we are producing 30 thousand barrels. We will increase this to 100 thousand barrels in 2024. Turkey will become a country that produces 200 thousand barrels of oil in its own fields. We will do our best to meet the daily demand of 1 million barrels in our country from this. Additionally, within the scope of the 2024-2030 energy efficiency plan, Turkey will have reduced carbon emissions by 100 million tons. Beyond being a reliable energy transit country, we are working on our own interests. We aim to implement emissions trading within EPİAŞ next year,” he stated.
