Ministry denies report on Mehmet Şimşek: 'The statements do not belong to our Minister'

The Ministry has issued a statement regarding remarks attributed to Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek on an online news site. The statement emphasized that the headline "There will be no support for the exchange rate until single-digit inflation" does not reflect the truth.

The Ministry's statement included the following:

"The headline 'Minister Şimşek: No support for the exchange rate until single-digit inflation,' which appeared above the masthead in Ekonomim Gazetesi, does not contain statements belonging to our Minister.

Our Treasury and Finance Minister, Mr. Mehmet Şimşek, attended the Extended Board of Presidents meeting of the Turkish Exporters Assembly on March 7, 2025, where he listened to the issues on the exporters' agenda and provided comprehensive answers.

The meeting was held behind closed doors, and the assessments attributed to our Minister regarding the exchange rate do not reflect the truth.

In response to exporters' questions about the exchange rate, our Minister stated that steps are being taken to balance volatility to ensure the healthy functioning of the foreign exchange market and that excessive fluctuations will not be permitted until inflation expectations are anchored. Furthermore, noting that the primary goal of the implemented monetary policy is not to appreciate the Turkish Lira, our Minister expressed that the interest in the Turkish Lira in the market naturally leads to a real appreciation in the exchange rate.

In this context, the content of a closed-door meeting was taken out of context and distorted, non-factual statements were used, and the public was misled by a report published without verifying its accuracy."
