Nearly 1 million investors have left the stock market in the last two months

While the upward momentum in deposit interest rates continues, the decline in the number of investors in the stock market has also continued without slowing down.

According to data from the Central Securities Depository, the number of equity investors was recorded at 7 million 643 thousand 867 as of December 2023. Thus, it was observed that 562 thousand 115 investors left the stock market compared to the previous month. This marked a record monthly investor exodus.

According to the report on Bloomberg HT; when compared to October, when the number of investors in the stock market hit a record high of 8.6 million, it was observed that 912 thousand investors have abandoned the stock market.

The number of investors in the stock market had surpassed the 2 million threshold in 2021 and the 3 million threshold at the end of 2022.

In 2023, when initial public offerings (IPOs) accelerated, there were rapid increases in the number of investors every month. A record 54 companies went public in 2023. However, towards the end of the year, the upward momentum in deposit interest rates, reflecting the tightening cycle, opened a new path for investors in terms of returns.
