To be applied every 6 months: New deduction from banks for stock investors
The fact that some banks have started charging account maintenance fees on stock investment accounts has sparked intense debate among investors. This deduction, which will be applied every six months, can reach up to 790 TL annually.
Many banks have introduced an "account maintenance fee" as an additional cost to accounts where customers hold their stock investments. In recent notification messages sent out, it was stated that this new fee is currently being applied only to certain customers and at specific banks. While the annual amount of the fee varies by bank, it can range from 390 TL up to 790 TL.
It has been reported that these deductions from investors' accounts will be carried out every 6 months. In other words, bank customers will be required to pay this cost twice a year.
With the implementation of this new policy, reactions among investors have risen. Small investors, in particular, argue that these additional costs will have a negative impact on their rates of return, and some have begun choosing to close their accounts. There has been no fully transparent explanation regarding the criteria banks use to determine these deductions or how the implementation method is decided under this policy framework.
Some customers state that banks should announce additional fees more clearly. Investors expressing their views by saying, "If these types of costs were known in advance, alternative ways would have been sought," believe that changes in fee policies could affect individual investment decisions.
The fact that the regulation has been implemented by only a limited number of banks for now raises questions about whether other institutions will adopt similar practices in the future. There has not yet been a collective statement from the banking sector on this matter.
Investors state that they may begin searching for more cost-effective investment channels due to rising costs. Whether banks will continue the practice and whether it will become widespread across the sector will become clear in the coming period.
