Nuclear energy capacity to be tripled

On the second day of the World Climate Action Summit, held as part of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is chaired by the United Arab Emirates this year, countries signed the "Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy," highlighting the key role of nuclear energy in reaching the net-zero emissions target by 2050 and limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees.

While the US led the calls to triple global nuclear energy capacity, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Ghana, Hungary, Japan, South Korea, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, and Ukraine were the countries that signed the declaration.

These countries committed to tripling global nuclear energy capacity by 2050 compared to 2020 levels.

US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry stated that there are "trillions of dollars available" to secure investments in nuclear energy, arguing that reaching the net-zero emissions target is not possible without nuclear energy.

According to International Atomic Energy Agency data, global nuclear energy capacity has not shown significant variation since 2020 and remains at the 375-gigawatt level.
