Producer inflation in the US exceeded expectations in February

The Producer Price Index (PPI) in the US rose by 0.6 percent on a monthly basis and 1.6 percent on an annual basis in February, performing above expectations.

Producer inflation in the US exceeded expectations in February

The Producer Price Index (PPI) in the US rose by 0.6 percent on a monthly basis and 1.6 percent on an annual basis in February, exceeding expectations.

The US Department of Labor released the PPI data for February.

Accordingly, the PPI increased by 0.6 percent in February compared to the previous month, marking the highest increase since August 2023.

Market expectations were for producer prices to rise by 0.3 percent on a monthly basis. The PPI had also increased by 0.3 percent in January.

Producer prices increased by 1.6 percent on an annual basis in February. Market expectations were for an annual increase of 1.1 percent. The PPI had risen by 1 percent on an annual basis in January.

Core PPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose by 0.3 percent on a monthly basis and 2 percent on an annual basis in February. Expectations were for core producer inflation to be 0.2 percent on a monthly basis and 1.9 percent on an annual basis. Core producer prices had recorded an increase of 0.5 percent on a monthly basis and 2 percent on an annual basis in January.

The PPI measures the prices of inputs used in production and provides clues regarding final product prices and general inflation. The US Federal Reserve closely monitors all inflation indicators, including the PPI.
